The Advanced Trauma Center

Dr. Carol E. Copeland at the Advanced Trauma Center of the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics believes quality care starts by spending time with each patient to properly diagnose and manage the condition. She is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in orthopedic traumatology for both pediatric and adult patients. She treats acute fractures, post-traumatic complications, malunions, nonunions and infection. Dr. Copeland also offers state-of-the-art care for post-traumatic, postpartum and degenerative conditions of the pelvis.

Dr. Copeland is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. She is a member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society, American Medical Women's Association, Orthopaedic Trauma Association and Maryland Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Copeland is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. She was named a Top Doctor by Baltimore Magazine in 2007. She was also elected to the 2009/2010 Best Doctors in America® database.

She received her medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. Her post-graduate education consisted of a five-year orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Maryland Hospital, followed by fellowship training in orthopedic traumatology at Shock Trauma Center/Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services.

An accomplished researcher, Dr. Copeland's major interests include fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum and functional outcomes of multiply injured patients. Some of Dr. Copeland's most recent articles and presentations relate to the percutaneous fixation of acetabular fractures and classification of pelvic fractures. She is active in teaching through AO North America and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. Dr. Copeland regularly reviews research articles for both the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma.
